National parks in Nebraska
Every national park and public-land unit in Nebraska, scored and ranked by our Experience Score.
Nebraska's National Park Service units tend to attract travelers who care more about open land and deep time than packed overlooks and Instagram scenery. The state's parks fall into two broad worlds. In the east and sandhills, the Missouri National Recreational River and the Niobrara National Scenic River are about as close to undisturbed waterway as you'll find anywhere in the Great Plains, and both score well for stargazing, hiking, and camping. Out in the western panhandle, Scotts Bluff National Monument and Agate Fossil Beds National Monument anchor a landscape that ancient seas carved and nineteenth-century migration shaped. The Lewis and Clark, California, and Mormon Pioneer National Historic Trails cut across nearly the entire state, following corridors that emigrants actually walked, not just passed through on horseback. That history adds a weight to the scenic drives and roadside stops that you feel rather than read about on a sign. Homestead National Historical Park pins the pioneer story to one specific piece of ground. If you want solitude, dark skies, and history that hasn't been smoothed into a theme park version of itself, Nebraska is worth the unhurried trip.
