Steelhead Falls is about 0.5 miles from the trailhead. Its geological formation spans millions of years. Cliffs show colorful grooves, evidence of erosion over time. In spring, wildflowers appear on the slopes. Golden eagles fly overhead.
The trail to the falls is generally easy. It includes one small, steep section. Visitors can picnic, fish in the Deschutes River, or explore the rocky shores. It is also a place to relax by the falls.
The Deschutes Canyon-Steelhead Falls Wilderness Study Area (WSA), designated OR-5-14, is part of a larger study that includes U.S. Forest Service lands. This WSA is in Central Oregon. It forms a triangle with the towns of Madras, Redmond, and Sisters. The Steelhead Falls study area is a long, narrow strip. It runs along the upper Deschutes River, within and next to the Crooked River National Grasslands.
The area is open year-round. Overnight camping is allowed; sites are first come, first served. Amenities include limited trailer parking and an outhouse. There is no potable water. Campfires are permitted, but summer fire restrictions apply. Pets must remain under owner control always. They need to be leashed at the trailhead and in the camping area. Rattlesnakes may hide under rocks and brush.
