Is Hoover Dam worth your trip?
Hoover Dam is not your typical wilderness escape, it is an industrial marvel that happens to sit inside a recreation area.
The free access is a genuine draw, and the combination of a landmark engineering structure, Lake Mead's boating opportunities, and surprisingly decent hiking and biking options gives it more range than most people expect. That said, crowds are relentless and the desert setting is unforgiving. Come for the guided powerplant tour and the sheer audacity of the dam itself, but do not expect solitude or deep backcountry experience.
Best for
History buffs, engineering enthusiasts, and families wanting an educational day trip will get the most from this. Serious hikers or wildlife seekers who prioritize remote natural settings will likely find the experience too infrastructure-heavy and tourist-dense.

What the score cannot tell you
The Experience Score measures what a unit documents and how reachable it is. It does not try to measure what our data cannot see: scenery and beauty, how crowded a place gets, trail or road conditions, the weather the week you visit, or the quality of a particular ranger program. A small, focused site can score lower than a sprawling park and still be the better trip for you. Read the score as a like-for-like comparison of what each unit offers on paper, and read the verdict above for who it actually suits.
From the NPS: Hoover Dam on the Colorado River, is a feature of the Boulder Canyon Project . Located on the Arizona-Nevada state line, at 726 feet it is the highest concrete dam in the United States, a National Historic Landmark, and one of America's Seven Modern Civil Engineering Wonders. The Bureau of Reclamation started conducting guided tours through Hoover Dam and Powerplant in 1937. More than 1,000,000 visitors a year take the tours and millions more drive across the dam. A visitor center and 400 car parking garage opened in 1995. The visitor center includes a theater, exhibit gallery, and a rooftop observation deck. Food and beverages are available at the dam also. Visitors may visit an outdoor overlook above the dam and a room where power is generated. The visitor center contains an exhibit gallery and a film about the dam's construction. Operating Hours: Open 9:00 AM -- Close 5:00 PM. (All times are for the Pacific-time zone). The Hoover Dam Visitor Center is open every day of the year except for Thanksgiving and Christmas.
