The Donner und Blitzen Wild and Scenic River system includes almost 88 miles of waterways. The mainstem of the river, along with Big and Little Indian Creeks, Fish Creek, the South Fork, and the Little Blitzen River, received their original designations in 1988. In 2000, several more tributaries joined the system, including parts of Mud and Ankle Creeks.
Visitors can hunt, fish, camp, backpack, and ride horses. Four developed campgrounds serve as access points: Page Springs, Fish Lake, Jackman Park, and South Steens.
Before you go, plan for limited services. Carry enough water and food for your entire trip. Do not drink from untested water sources. Ticks, mosquitoes, and rattlesnakes are present in some areas during spring and summer. The mountain’s high elevation can cause rapid temperature changes; 100-degree days are common, and snow can fall year-round. Be ready for sudden lightning storms, snow, rain, and high winds.
Services like gas stations, phones, and cell reception are far apart. Tell someone your travel plans and expected return time. Do not rely on phone service for emergency communication. Always begin your trip with a full tank of fuel. Call ahead for current information.
