The Donner und Blitzen is not a destination you stumble into.
This 88-mile wild and scenic river system in the high desert of southeastern Oregon rewards people who show up prepared and patient. The fishing, the wilderness hiking, and the sheer remoteness are genuine draws, but the experience score of 59 reflects real limitations: this is a rugged, self-sufficient corridor, not a curated park experience. Worth the trip for the right traveler, but it will not meet you halfway.
Who it is for
Anglers, backcountry campers, equestrians, and wildlife photographers who want genuine solitude in Oregon high desert will find this deeply satisfying. Casual visitors expecting developed amenities or short scenic loops should look elsewhere.

The Experience Score measures what a unit documents and how reachable it is. It does not try to measure what our data cannot see: scenery and beauty, how crowded a place gets, trail or road conditions, the weather the week you visit, or the quality of a particular ranger program. A small, focused site can score lower than a sprawling park and still be the better trip for you. Read the score as a like-for-like comparison of what each unit offers on paper, and read the verdict above for who it actually suits.
From the NPS: Nearly rugged 88 miles of waterways comprise the Donner und Blitzen Wild and Scenic River and its tributaries. The mainstem of the river as well as Big and Little Indian Creeks, Fish Creek, the South Fork and the Little Blitzen River were originally designated in 1988. Several more tributaries were added to the river system in 2000, including portions of Mud and Ankle Creeks. Activities include hunting, fishing, camping backpacking, horse use and other outdoor pursuits. Four developed campgrounds at Page Springs, Fish Lake, Jackman Park and South Steens make great launch points for backcountry adventure in the area’s wild and scenic rivers. Know Before You Go Carry enough water and food to last your entire trip, and do not drink from untested water sources. Ticks, mosquitoes, and rattlesnakes in certain areas during spring and summer. Weather conditions - the mountain’s high elevation can cause rapid temperature changes. Blustery, 100-degree days are common and snow can fall year-round. Be prepared for sudden lightning storms, snow, rain, and high winds. Long distances between services - including gas stations, phones, and cell phone reception. Let someone at home know where you plan to go and when you plan to return. Phone service should not be relied on for emergency communication.
