National parks in Vermont
Every national park and public-land unit in Vermont, scored and ranked by our Experience Score.
Vermont's NPS presence is small and unusually focused, built around trails and a land ethic rather than grand visitor centers or scenic overlooks packed with tour groups. Two long-distance routes, the Appalachian and the North Country, thread through the state and together form the backbone of what the agency offers here. Both are best suited to hikers and campers who want sustained time on forested ridges and in quiet backcountry, not a quick stop at a pullout before driving on. On the cultural side, Marsh-Billings-Rockefeller National Historical Park in Woodstock anchors the experience. It is one of the few NPS sites in the country dedicated explicitly to conservation history and the relationship between land stewardship and community. Families find it just as worthwhile as the trail crowd, which is rarer than it sounds for a site with that kind of interpretive focus. Vermont rewards the deliberate traveler. Someone comfortable with a slower pace, genuinely interested in walking or in the ideas behind a landscape, and unbothered by the absence of the blockbuster crowds that define the larger western parks.
