Delaware's four National Park Service units offer a compact but varied collection. These parks suit visitors looking for depth rather than grand sights. The Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail is the most well known of the four. It combines history and outdoor adventure along routes explored by a colonial-era figure. First State National Historical Park focuses on Delaware's constitutional and colonial past, which gave the state its nickname.
