Zapata Falls is a 30-foot (9.1 m) waterfall. It sits near the base of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, on Bureau of Land Management land. This area is next to Rio Grande National Forest and south of Great Sand Dunes National Park.
The hike to the falls is 0.5 mi (0.80 km) long and mildly steep. Viewing the falls requires wading across the stream and climbing rocks. Black swifts nest here; it is one of the few known breeding sites for the species in Colorado.
In summer, the falls offer a cool respite. In winter, the waterfall freezes into a large column of ice. This column is suitable for experienced ice climbers. A short, adventurous hike over slippery rocks leads to this 25-foot waterfall at Zapata Falls Recreation Area. The area is equally impressive in winter when the falls become an ice column.
