Ninigret National Wildlife Refuge in Charlestown, Rhode Island, is made up of two sections: the Salt Pond Unit and the Kettle Pond Forested Upland Unit. This refuge, one of Rhode Island's five national wildlife refuges, was established in 1970. It covers 858 acres. The terrain includes grasslands, shrub lands, wooded swamps, and freshwater ponds.
The refuge was once part of the Charlestown Naval Auxiliary Landing Fields. Today, it offers over four miles of hiking trails. From the observation platform at Grassy Point, you can see Ninigret Pond, Rhode Island's largest coastal salt pond. More than 250 bird species have been recorded here. The refuge's shores support marine life like blue crab, bay scallop, and winter flounder.
The Kettle Pond Visitor Center is located in the refuge's headquarters unit. This section of forested uplands was purchased in 2001. It contains pitch and white pines, black and white oaks, blueberry shrubs, sweet fern, and princess pine. Trails here allow views of the great ice sheet's past effects, seasonal changes in the vernal pool, and Watchaug Pond.
