Our Verdict

Is Indiana Dunes National Park worth it?

Indiana Dunes punches well above its weight for a park that most Americans overlook.

Fifteen miles of Lake Michigan shoreline, fifty-plus miles of trails, and a genuinely surprising range of habitats make this far more than a beach day. The $15 entry is modest for what you get, and the year-round access means it rewards visits in every season. This is not a destination you fly across the country for, but if you are within driving range of Chicago or Indianapolis, skipping it would be a real mistake.

Who it is for

Families, Chicago-area day-trippers, birders, and winter outdoor enthusiasts will all find their niche here. Visitors seeking remote wilderness or iconic western scenery should look elsewhere, but anyone wanting surprising ecological variety close to a major city will be rewarded.

Highlights

  • Lake Michigan freshwater swimming and paddleboarding along 15 miles of sandy shoreline
  • Exceptional birdwatching in a mosaic of dunes, woodlands, prairies, and wetlands
  • Genuine four-season use including cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and snow play in winter
  • Stargazing opportunities that feel unexpected this close to the Chicago metro

Editor's tipArrive early on summer weekends as beach parking fills fast. If you visit between October and April you will likely have the trails nearly to yourself, and the dune landscapes look dramatic under low winter light.
