Greater Sand Dunes SRMA in Wyoming is a raw, self-directed public lands experience built around the Killpecker Dune Field, one of the largest active dune systems in North America.
Free to enter and light on infrastructure, it rewards visitors who come with a specific purpose, whether that is riding OHVs across open sand, hunting, or seeking out the White Mountain or Cedar Canyon petroglyphs. It is not a curated park experience. Expect minimal signage, dispersed camping, and a landscape that genuinely feels remote. For the right traveler, that is exactly the appeal.

Best for OHV riders, hunters, and history-curious visitors drawn to petroglyph sites. Families comfortable with primitive camping will find it surprisingly adventurous. Anyone expecting developed facilities, ranger programs, or a polished visitor experience should look elsewhere.
