Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge opened in 1983. It is the only refuge created specifically to protect the Florida manatee, a threatened subspecies of the West Indian manatee. This refuge protects Three Sisters Springs, the last undeveloped spring habitat in Kings Bay. King Spring is one of seven federal manatee sanctuaries. These sanctuaries operate from November to March. They provide critical habitat for the over 600 manatees that migrate to Kings Bay each winter. Manatees also receive protection from the 2012 designation of the entire Kings Bay area as the Kings Bay Manatee Refuge, also known as the Kings Bay Manatee Protection Area. Buzzard, Parker, and Banana islands offer habitat for bald eagles, osprey, wood storks, and other shore birds.
