Bright Star Canyon runs through the southern part of the Bureau of Land Management's Bright Star Wilderness. It follows Kelso Creek after leaving Sequoia National Forest. Cortez Canyon is in the northwestern section, carved from the Kelso Mountains. Kelso Peak, in the northeastern section, is 5,090 feet tall. Its drainages flow north, south, and east.
Elevations here range from 3,000 feet near the floor of Kelso Valley to over 5,800 feet on the highest peaks and ridges. Mid-summer daytime temperatures can go above 100°F, with cooler nights. In winter, snow often covers higher elevations. When there is enough rain, wildflowers appear on the slopes.
Piñon pine and juniper dot the upper slopes. Lower slopes are brushy, with large granite outcrops.
