The Cabo Rojo National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1974. Its purpose was to support the national migratory bird management program. In 1999, the refuge expanded to include the Cabo Rojo Salt Flats, mangrove fringes, and uplands, totaling 1,836 acres. This land is critical for protecting one of the most important shorebird habitats in the Caribbean.
It is one of nine refuges within the Caribbean Islands National Wildlife Refuge Complex. The Caribbean islands feature some of the most diverse ecosystems in the United States, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. These ecosystems offer chances to protect and restore tropical forests and wintering grounds for neotropical migratory birds. They also provide habitat for over 78 threatened or endangered species. So far, 245 plant species and 145 bird species have been identified at Cabo Rojo National Wildlife Refuge.
